After the successful
Northern Lights-Expedition in 2001, the plans for the next tour were made in January
2002. The appropriate location was found immediately, because the cottage
in Karhujärvi (Finland) and the people there are just ideal for another
successful expedition.
The trip took finally place in the time from March
10th to 23rd 2002, because from mid March till the end of April one can expect
some bigger auroral displays.
As the cottage is located only very few kilometers
south of the arctic circle (28.320°east, 66.016°north) the northern lights
are visible in almost every clear night. This fact was actually proven again during
this years tour, as the aurora borealis was visible in each of the 8 clear nights.
During the individual displays the northern lights sometimes were that wide and
intense, that the whole winter landscape was completely illuminated.
On the
following pages a selection of pictures is shown. They are chosen from the about
400 slides I have taken during the 2002 expedition.
The pictures of the individual
days with visible aurora borealis can be accessed by clicking to the respective magnetogramm of that day (Magnetometer
of the Geophysical Observatory Sodankylä).
The geomagnetic activity during this 2nd Northern Lights-Expedition was definitely
higher than in 2001. This became obvious in a greater variaty of forms within
the auroral displays. But as during the last years 1st expedition I still was
not able to see a real big geomagnetic storm from this northern vantage point.
That alone should be cause enough for another Northern Lights-Expedition.
Besides to the aurora images there are also some pictures from the trips to the
surrounding area (100km).
All the pictures were taken with my Canon EOS 50E camera.
And now have a lot of fun looking at the pictures
from the northern countries.
Any comment in my guestbook is very much appreciated.
